Clean your home effectively: Become faster with a plan & system

Anyone who regularly has to clean their apartment knows the dilemma: everyday life is full, time is short – especially in the hectic pace of life in big cities like Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, or Cologne. But dust, crumbs, and limescale unfortunately don't stay put. The good news: with a clear system, cleaning becomes easier, faster, and significantly more effective. And those who really want to save time opt for professional support from a housekeeper.

1. Preparation is half the battle.

Before you reach for the mop: Clear surfaces, gather all cleaning supplies, and open the windows. Fresh air not only helps eliminate bad odors but also makes mopping more pleasant. An organized start saves time and ensures a better result.

🧽 Extra tip : If you hire a household helper, you should also prepare briefly – the better the overview, the more efficiently they can work.

‍

‍

Second order of operations: Start at the top, finish at the bottom

To prevent dirt from simply ending up elsewhere, the rule when cleaning your apartment is: always from top to bottom.

So:

  • First, wipe away dust – on shelves, windowsills, picture frames
  • Then vacuum – especially in the living room, under the sofa or between cushions.
  • Finally, wipe with a damp cloth – first the edges of the room, then backwards in a figure-eight motion.
  • Finally, wipe the floors dry.

This method allows you to work systematically and avoid duplication of effort.

🧽 Extra tip : When wiping surfaces and floors, please do not wipe back and forth, but in one direction. Otherwise, the dirt will only be spread around.

3. Room by room – this is how you keep track

Divide the house cleaning into rooms and tackle only one area at a time. This is more motivating – and you'll see progress faster.

‍

Do you want your day to start with freshness and clarity?

Bathroom – Hygiene is paramount

  • Use different cloths for the toilet and surfaces around the sink (Tip: A color-coded system helps)
  • Use a microfiber cloth to gently polish faucets. Yellow-green sponges, on the other hand, will eventually ruin faucets because they scratch them.
  • Always wipe down shower walls immediately after showering and dry them with a towel to prevent limescale and mold.
  • Wipe the floor thoroughly with a wet cloth, otherwise dirt will settle in the joints (rule of thumb: a matchstick should just barely float on the water's surface)
  • Don't skimp on water when cleaning in sanitary areas to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Clean the toilet with an all-purpose or bathroom cleaner. Vinegar cleaner helps against limescale. The unpleasant odors tend to collect under the rim of the toilet bowl where the water comes out. Use the toilet brush (possibly with an additional brush attachment) and cleaner to get underneath. Be careful, it might splash.
  • However, when it comes to cleaning products, more is not better – in the end you just need more water to rinse it away.

‍

Cleaning the living room – for a more comfortable atmosphere

  • Dust decorations and surfaces.
  • Clean televisions and electronics with a dry microfiber cloth
  • Vacuum the sofa, air out the blankets
  • Clean the floor thoroughly.

‍

Kitchen – the basis for cleanliness

  • Wipe worktops with all-purpose cleaner after each use and dry the fittings, e.g. with a dish towel.
  • The best way to remove limescale is with vinegar water – it's very easy to mix: Combine household vinegar and water in a ratio of 5:1 or 10:1.
  • Put the chairs up and then wipe the floors and under the furniture.
  • Clean trash cans regularly

‍

Bedroom – fresh air and clean mattresses

  • Ventilate daily by opening the windows wide.
  • You should vacuum your mattress every 4-6 weeks.
  • Change and wash bedding regularly, approximately every week to every two weeks at the most.
  • Dusting bedside tables & lamps

‍

Clarity in the room, peace of mind

Windows – for a crystal-clear view

  • Add a few drops of dish soap to lukewarm water and thoroughly lather the windows with it.
  • Use the rubber squeegee to remove the excess rubber material from top to bottom.
  • Wipe the bottom edge of the window with a leather cloth.
  • By the way: Glass cleaner is only suitable for local stains such as fingerprints.

‍

‍

4. A clean apartment without stress: with small routines

If you don't feel like scrubbing for hours, you should invest 5-10 minutes daily. This will keep many things clean in the long run.

  • Evening mini-check: wipe down the kitchen, clear surfaces
  • Rotate weekly: wipe out the refrigerator, wipe down the bathroom tiles
  • Clean thoroughly every month: windows, lampshades, radiators

This way your apartment stays clean and tidy all the time – without any major cleaning day.
